Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell has hit back at Sarah Jessica Parker for criticising the hit TV show's prequel, insisting the actress should consider her own career path before taking aim at the new Carrie Bradshaw.

Parker played the sassy writer on the big and small screen and it appears she may have upset Bushnell by opening up about The Carrie Diaries, which features AnnaSophia Robb as a younger version of her character.

The actress said: "She (Robb) is a lovely girl and I want her to feel good about it, but it's odd."

Bushnell has now addressed Parker's comments, pointing out that her first role as Annie on Broadway had been played by a string of actresses before her.

"The reality is, that's showbiz," Bushnell tells The Daily Beast.

"Sarah Jessica's first part was somebody else's part. She played Annie on Broadway. She understands how these things work."

And the author claims Sex and the City fans needed a new take on Bradshaw, insisting Parker had taken her as far as she could after the TV series and two spin-off movies.

She adds: "Look, Sarah Jessica Parker is 47. I think, with the second movie, Carrie Bradshaw couldn't be an ingenue anymore.

But I think they were stuck doing what the audience wanted.

"Realistically, a middle-aged woman who was married without children would be much more focused on her career and less focused on this Mr Big (character): 'Does he love me?'... 'Does he still not love me?' I mean, I think it was coming to the end of what they could do with the character."
