1000 Rockers Win Over Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters will play a gig in provincial Italy to thank local fans who staged a spectacular tribute to the US rock band that went viral on the internet.

"This video, how beautiful, how very beautiful. Thanks a lot, we are coming, I promise," Grohl said in Italian on the Foo Fighter's Facebook page on Friday.

"See you soon, thanks a lot. Love you, ciao."

He was responding to a video of 1000 musicians playing a cover of Foo Fighters' Learn to Fly in Cesena, a town of less than 100,000 near Italy's eastern Adriatic coastline.

The video has attracted more than 16 million views on YouTube over the past few days.

The performance was the culmination of a 14-month project called The Rockin'Thousand, led by 39-year-old Fabio Zaffagnini, backed by a crowdfunding campaign that raised almost 45,000 euros ($A67,476.38).

On the project's website, Zaffagnini explains that he looked for a "crazy idea" to woo the Foo Fighters back to Cesena region, where they last played in 1997.

"We have to organize something that kicks ass worldwide and can be seen by Dave Grohl," he wrote.
