Adele Just Did Something FREAKIN’ Awesome at the BRIT Awards
Adele made a powerful speech at the 2016 Brit Awards on Wednesday night, where she publicly supported Kesha in her struggle against Sony Music and her alleged abuser and producer Dr. Luke.
"To come back after so long away and be so warmly received is really lovely, thank you so much," she said while accepting the first award of the night for best British female solo artist.
"And to all the other girls, thank you for letting me in your company," she said, addressing fellow nominees Florence & the Machine, Jess Glynne and Laura Marling (Amy Winehouse was posthumously nominated). "You're all incredible, you're all amazing and it's a privilege to be alongside you."
She also took the time to thank her record label for the way they treated her and "for embracing the fact that I'm a woman and being encouraged by it."
"And I'd also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha," she said while holding up her award.
Kesha has alleged that her producer at Sony, Dr. Luke, drugged and raped her a decade ago and has committed ongoing abuse.
She was denied an injunction by the New York Supreme Court that would have allowed her to record outside of Dr. Luke's purview.
The judge said it's not reasonable to "decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated."
Adele has joined other celebrities like Halsey, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift in supporting Kesha.
