Matt Corby Drops Willy Wonka-Inspired Single
It's been a while since we heard from Matt Corby but let's face it - 'Brother' is still a bop, seven years on.
Lucky for us, the ex-Australian Idol runner up has dropped a new single, 'No Ordinary Life', the first offering from his forthcoming new album due for release later this year.
The new single transports the listener into Corby’s kaleidoscopic reimagining of the world. The slice of shimmering psychedelic splendour, taps a bold new direction by twisting a mind-bending melody, around a confronting but ultimately uplifting lyric.
“On No Ordinary Life, we were using Willy Wonka as a reference, literally, as a way to write melodies. I know that sounds a bit crazy, but that film has some strong melodic ideology," Corby said.
"For some reason when you say Willy Wonka, it sets a mood – this magical, hyper-melodic, crooning, beautiful thing, a journey into the whimsical. We tried to make this song and a few others in that vein – as joyous as possible, which is definitely a change to what I used to do.”
You'll notice that the song sways away from Corby's earlier folksy acoustic style, but we are all for these psych trip inspired tunes. But, what inspired Corby to make another album? Funnily enough, it was the approaching arrival of his baby!
"When I found out that we were going to have a baby, I obviously did the guy thing and freaked out. And then I was like....I really should get my s**t together and make another record."
Matt Corby's single 'No Ordinary Life' is out now.
