Queenslander Dies From Disease Similar To Mad Cow
A person has died after contracting a rare illness similar to that of mad cow disease.
According to News.com.au, QLD health was notified of the confirmed case last month, however, due to privacy reasons are unable to confirm the person's age, gender and where they are from.
The online notifiable conditions report, which can be accessed on the QLD health website, said that the patient was treated at the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.
The disease, known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is an incurable, rapidly progressive and fatal neurodegenerative human prion disease.
Early symptoms can range from confusion to disorientation and patients having trouble walking.
Death can take up to two years with extensive tests to be undertaken in order to diagnose the illness.
