'Rocketman' Almost Had A 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Crossover
So, get this: two of the biggest music biopics nearly overlapped.
In a recent interview, director of the Elton John biopic Rocketman, Dexter Fletcher, revealed that he almost included a Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury cameo.
A quick primer, while Bryan Singer directed most of Bohemian Rhapsody, he was replaced by Fletcher due to allegations of unprofessional behaviour on set.
At the same time he was brought onto Bohemian Rhapsody, Fletcher was also working on Rocketman.
Not only were both movies set in the same time period, they also include music manager John Reid, who managed both Elton John and Queen in the '70s.
As it turns out, Fletcher was planning a small crossover… but ended up wigging out.
“There was an idea I had one point, where Elton's in a restaurant with his mother,” he told Gay Star News.
“I thought John Reid and Freddie could be at another table and they wave at each other.
“That would have been amazing, [but] it didn’t come to pass. It would’ve been a little too knowing… I'm not looking to set out to make a cinematic universe!”
