12-Year-Old Girl Bullied After Shaving Her Head For Cancer
A schoolgirl was left in tears after being ridiculed for shaving her head for the World's Greatest Shave fundraising campaign.
Kyarah Doyle, from northern NSW, decided to shave her head for the Leukaemia Foundation World's Greatest Shave.
The 12-year-old had her long hair shaved off after raising nearly $800 for the charity.
"It was Kyarah’s own choice to do it," her mother Jessica Smith told Yahoo7.
"Leukaemia is always something which has been close to my heart. I lost a high school friend to it."
Despite her selfless act, Kyarah's peers at Inverell High School mocked her after she returned to school on Monday.
The inspirational teen came home in tears that afternoon.
"She was badly bullied," Smith said.
"She’s devastated and feels like she’s done the wrong thing. She shaved all her beautiful hair off and now she’s being targeted at school.
"She was bawling her eyes out and said kids were calling her ugly and asking why she chose to shave all her hair off."
The 12-year-old was so deeply affected she spent the next day at home.
"There was a group of girls laughing about it," she recalls. "They were shouting things at me and I just keep thinking how stupid I was being to have been friends with them in the first place."
Even more upsetting is that the bullying occurred shortly after the high school held an anti-bullying information session.
"I’m also angry the school didn’t explain to students why she had shaved her head," she said. "They should have taken her or students aside to explain why she had no hair."
