7 Christmas THRILLER Movies To Scare You Silly

When you think of Christmas, you probably think of movies like Home Alone - or Love Actually. They’re bright, they’re cheery - albeit full of mischief - they’re normally pretty safe. You know, PG. What you don’t think of, is dark Christmas movies… ones that keep you guessing, make you jump… keep you up at night. But they’re movies that aren’t to be missed, too… We’ve picked out seven Christmas thrillers you need to set time aside to watch this festive season.

Batman Returns

Tucker and Esther Cobblepot throw their deformed infant child Oswald into Gotham River, fearing he would become a menace to society after attacking their cat. His basket floats to an abandoned zoo and a rookery of penguins raise him as one of their own. That’s where the story begins - and then Batman is introduced, to fight the bad guys that inhabit Gotham.

This Christmas thriller/comedy is about a boy who inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. Suddenly you won’t be so trusting of things that go bump in the night…

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home cause confusion. This classic tale wouldn’t be described as ‘horror’, but does have the classic Tim Burton darkness that his fans love so much. Don’t skip this one this December.

Don’t Open ‘Till Christmas

Caution: gruesome - for 18 years and over.

A man in a Santa suit and a woman meet in an alley and while they’re getting acquainted, are murdered by a man in a mask. Then, at another party, another man in a Santa Claus suit is killed. It seems there’s a Santa killer on the loose, and if you haven’t seen this 1984 classic, you need to.

Starring Bill Murray, this Christmas special shows a selfish, cynical T.V. executive is haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve. Must watch.

The Ref

A cat burglar is forced to take a bickering, dysfunctional family hostage on Christmas Eve. A little on the dark side, this 1994 drama depicts family Christmas a little all too well.

I Am Santa Claus

A documentary that follows the real lives of five ‘Santas’ for an entire year. Though they have a very specific job come December, the rest of their lives are not what many of us expect - and couldn’t be further from what they look like; a perpetually jolly Saint…
