Bindi And Robert Share Sweet Message For Steve Irwin Day

Steve Irwin Day has long been celebrated on November 15 but we have only just learned why that date is so special.

While Irwin’s name is intrinsically linked with crocodiles, he had a love of all wildlife.

Before he passed away in 2006, Steve also had a close bond with a Galapagos land tortoise named Harriet.

November 15 was in fact Harriet’s birthday – and she lived to 175 years old – so that is where the tradition of a mid-November celebration stems from.

“In honour of their special relationship and making sure Steve Irwin day is all about wildlife and wild places, we are continuing the tradition of a mid-November celebration with Steve,” Terri explained.

The late Irwin’s wife Terri was joined by the couple’s two children, Bindi and Bob, to pay their respects to their father and promote the special day at Australia Zoo today.

“Truly [we miss him] every day I think for both of us,” Bindi said.

“For us we are really lucky that his spirit and his heart lives on at the Australia Zoo and in each and every one of us.

“Every day that we put on our khaki we are getting that little piece of dad back and I think that’s really special.”

The normally more reserved Bob piped in with his own tribute to his father.

“It’s really, really nice to see everyone come in today on Steve Irwin day to celebrate everything that he did,” Bob said.

“It’s really, really a fun day.

“We certainly think about him and miss him every day but we are excited to be continuing in his legacy.”

Bindi was eight years old, while Bob was just two years old when Steve was fatally stabbed by a stingray while filming a segment for TV in 2006.
