Blogger Who Quit Instagram Weeps in Emotional Video
In the day and age we live in, social media reigns supreme.
A person isn’t so much judged by their character as they are their number of Instagram likes.
It’s a sad state of affairs, but some are more consumed by it than others.
Yesterday, 18-year-old Instagram star Essena O’Neill revealed that after years of editing herself to look a certain way almost everyday of her life, she was taking a bold stance against social media and the unattainable, unrealistic image of perfection.
The QLD teen's movement included quitting social media, abandoning 800,000 followers and going back to past posts and editing the captions to reveal the ‘truth’ about what she was feeling and what it took to achieve each shot; if it was paid for, how many shots it took to get the "right" one, which ones were flat-out lies.
Maybe I should cover up my blemishes so people will like my appearance. Maybe I should straighten and redye my hair so I'll get more likes. Maybe I should stuff my bra so I appear more sexualized. Maybe I should pay more attention to my clothes so they appeal to mass media... Maybe I should spend hours and dollars on perfecting myself so you will like me.. Yes maybe that's what life's about (Not directed at any individual, actually that's directed to myself... Why do we do the things we? Edit: Fear and delusion. Our youth is obsessed with a 2D world. It's consuming us.
"Social media is not real!" she declared. Her message soon went viral.
Now, she’s recorded another video giving thanks to everyone for helping her spread the message. There is more to life than editing perfect photos and faking happiness for social media.
Be prepared to see A LOT more from her…
Edit real caption: This is what I like to call a perfectly contrived candid shot. Nothing is candid about this. While yes going for a morning jog and ocean swim before school was fun, I felt the strong desire to pose with my thighs just apart #thighgap boobs pushed up #vsdoublepaddingtop and face away because obviously my body is my most likeable asset. Like this photo for my efforts to convince you that I'm really really hot #celebrityconstruct
