FINALLY: The Reason Behind Those Mini Pockets In Our Jeans!

If you've worn jeans before, it's very likely you'll be familiar with a tiny pocket on the front of your jeans.

It's rarely used (unless you find a two dollar coin on the footpath) and can be very annoying if you get your fingers stuck in it.

Frustrated, one internet user posted a question about the meaning behind the pocket and a user on Quora responded with a BRILLIANT answer.

The little pocket, also known as the 'fifth pocket' appeared on the very first version of Levi's back in 1873. According to the Levi Strauss website, it was 'originally included as protection for pocket watches, thus the name'. It was worked into the design to protect cowboys' pocket watches from falling out of their pants as they rode around on horses or worked on their ranches. If the cowboys wore their watches on a chair around their neck, the chains would easily tangle or break.

Pocket watches lost their popularity halfway through World War 1.

However Levi Strauss & Co haven't altered their design because 'this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, contom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket just to name a few. Not only is the pocket extremely useful for holding tiny trinkets, it is also loved by denim heads for the faded and worn nature it takes over time'.
