Revealed! 13 Cleaning Sprays That Perform WORSE Than Water
Each year, Aussies spend a fortune on cleaning products and spend countless hours keeping their home clean and tidy.
But according to Australian consumer advocacy group, CHOICE, a lot of popular multi-purpose cleaners we buy perform no better than using water.
CHOICE trialled 30 products, including water, where testers had to work out which ones worked best on soil removal and which had the most sprays per bottle.
And the final result?
The top performing product was Windex Mr Muscle Surface and Glass Multi Purpose Cleaner, followed by Nifti's Hard Working Multipurpose Cleaner.
Rounding out the top five were the Black and Gold Multi Purpose Cleaner, Bosisto's Multi Purpose Naturally Strong cleaner and Easy Off Bam Grease And Sparkle Cleaner.
Incredibly, plain water scored 32 per cent overall, beating 13 other best-selling products including Ajax Spray N Wipe Devine Blends Violet & Apple Blossom and Simple Green Antibacterial Cleaner.
The worst performing product was a homemade recipe of 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup of bicarb soda with two litres of water which scored just 10 per cent.
Other poor performers included Power Force Multipurpose Cleaner Lemon Zest at 11 per cent, Pura Choice Glass And Surface Cleaner Ultra Sensitive Lemon Myrtle at 12 per cent and the Organic Choice Multipurpose Lemongrass & Australian Myrtle at 14 per cent.
CHOICE explained, 'We check in-store to see what's available and we survey manufacturers to find out about their range of products. From this information we put together a final list that goes to our buyers,'
'They then head out to the retailers and purchase each product, just as a normal consumer would. We do this so we can be sure they're the same as any consumer would find them and not "tweaked" in any way.
'Lab experts then put each multipurpose cleaner to the test by soiling white ceramic tiles with oily grime.
'Using a scrubbing apparatus with a sponge attached, the tiles are scrubbed 40 times. The reflectance readings are taken before and after cleaning to determine the overall score which is a measure of dirt removal.
'Dirt removal accounts for 100% of the overall score.'
