Aussie Yowies Now All Over The US

Australian chocolate maker Yowie is stepping up its expansion in the US, quadrupling the number of Target stores stocking its character-themed treats and moving into more than 8,000 convenience stores.

The conservation-themed confectionary will also be available in more supermarkets on both the east and west coasts of the US.

The expansion also includes speciality stores including Bed Bath and Beyond.

The move follows a restructure of its US operations this year and a trial in 300 Target stores, and will increase sales in the first half of the 2018 calendar year, Yowie said on Thursday.

Chief operating officer Mark Schuessler said there was scope for further expansion in the US.

"We see distribution growth potential extending beyond fiscal 2018 ... driven by our current product innovation and investments in brand awareness through our marketing programs," Mr Schuessler said.

Much like Kinder Surprise, the chocolates depicted mythical Aussie ‘yowie’ creatures and contained toy animals.

Yowies were originally launched in Australia and New Zealand in 1995 by Cadbury, but a disagreement between Cadbury and the Yowie creators led to the line being discontinued in 2005.

In 2012, Perth-based licensing company Yowie Group Pty Ltd secured the rights to the brand, and began producing and distributing the chocolates in North America, where they have proved hugely popular.

In February 2017, after a 12-year hiatus, Yowies were re-introduced to Australia.

In October, the company also expanded to Canada.

Yowie shares hit their highest level since October, adding 2.5 cents, or 14.7 per cent, to 19.5 cents.
