Australia Has Said A Resounding YES To Marriage Equality
After years of heated debate and months of campaigning, the official results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal that 61.6 per cent of Australia is in favour of same-sex marriage.
While exit polls indicated that it would be a victory for the Yes side, the final numbers will come as a relief to the LGBTQI community both in Australia and around the world.
So what happens next? The government will now allow its MPs a “conscience vote” on a private member’s bill.
A bill sponsored by Liberal senator Dean Smith already has the backing of Labor and the Equality Campaign and has been co-signed by lower house MPs Tim Wilson, Trent Zimmerman, Warren Entsch and Trevor Evans.
If the bill passes - which, while extremely likely, is not guaranteed – Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has suggested that it could be passed into law as soon as Christmas.
The announcement was made by Australian Statistician David Kalisch and his deputy Jonathon Palmer at ABS House in Canberra just after 10am (AEDT) on Wednesday November 15, 2017.
