A school in Melbourne’s South East has sparked controversy after it published a newsletter advising parents to ‘vote no’ in the upcoming same sex marriage vote.

The notice was published in the St Peter’s College Cranbourne newsletter on August 30.

Father Joseph Abutu said in the newsletter ‘vote no to keep marriage as a unique relationship between a man and woman.’

One student revealed to 9News that many students now felt ‘unsafe and unwelcome and it has led to great divide in the school’.

St Peter’s principal Chris Black describes the school as a ‘proudly Catholic Community with a focus on Christ at the centre of our learning’.
