Feel Good Friday: A Disabled Duck Just Took His First Steps
Merlin is a White Pekin duck who's been born with a disability that's left him unable to walk.
(We know that's a grim way to start but it gets more 'feel
In November 2018 he was adopted by an animal rescue service after being found immobile in a New Jersey park.
Although the rescue shelter, Goats of Anarchy Sanctuary, primarily cares for (you guessed it) goats - they couldn't help but take up Merlin's cause.
Eventually, they found a company that makes wheelchairs for handicapped animals and approached them to make their first ever version for a duck.
They re-jigged a mini wheelchair used by cats and rabbits for the little fella, fitted it to Merlin and miraculously got him walking.
“Watching Merlin take his first steps was really cool,” said Mikayla Feehan, who works for the company.
“Once he was all rigged up, it was truly amazing. It's not every day you get to see animals take their first steps.”

Merlin the duck is new to GOA. He has injured or deformed legs and is unable to walk, but he is able to hobble around a little. We aren't sure if he will ever be able to go out with the other ducks, so until we figure things out he will enjoy nice warm baths in the house. That's perfectly normal right? I mean, we do have around 14 house goats already! So how much trouble could a house duck be? Merlin will most likely need a little cart and will probably live in the heated special needs barn once we are able to raise the rest of the funds needed to finish it. Merlin is amazing and we all love him so much already!!!
And just in case there are any icy hearts out there that still haven't melted, here's one more nugget to get you over the line:
Merlin's new set of wheels mean that he can run around and play with his best mate, a chicken called Opal.
Happy Friday everyone, have a ripper weekend!
