A powerful earthquake has struck the central Mexican state of Puebla on the anniversary of the devastating 1985 quake that killed ten thousand people.

Measuring at 7.1 magnitude, the quake has caused serious damage to buildings and according to local media, five lives.

The quake hit eight km southeast of Atencingo in the state of Puebla at a depth of 51 km, the US Geological Survey said.

The  earthquake was felt in the centre of Mexico City which is 121km from its epicentre, trapping people inside buildings, causing loss of electricity and crushing cars.

Several buildings in the city of Cholula had been damaged, including churches whose steeples collapsed.

Mexico City’s international airport suspended operations and was checking facilities for any damage.

Just hours before the earthquake, buildings across Mexico city held practice evacuation drills on the anniversary of the 1985 quake.
