Blokes Stop Thief By Taking Getaway Car Keys

Two Freo blokes stopped an alleged burglar from making a quick getaway after they took the keys to his car.

Bevan Duncan and Nathan Cugley told 9 News Perth they were out having a few drinks when, around 10.30pm, they heard a window being smashed.

They watched as a man broke into the Stand Up Surf Shop on Stirling Highway.

While the man wasn’t looking, Bevan and Nathan said they took the key from the ignition of his SUV parked outside the shop.

"He had a torch, and he was going from the front to the back... sort of scratching his head a bit wondering where the hell his keys disappeared to," Bevan said.

9 News Perth reporter Elly McCormack said he took off on foot as WA Police arrived.

"A few hundred metres up from the store on Stirling Highway, police eventually caught up with the alleged thief," she said.

"Overnight they charged a 27-year-old man from Mount Helena with a string of offences, including attempted burglary."
