Girl, 11, found dead in Brisbane unit

An 11-year-old girl found dead in Brisbane suffered a violent death.

She was the daughter of a woman whose body was found nearby, Queensland police say.

The child's body was discovered in the bathroom of a unit in Auchenflower, while the mother's body was found in Toowong.

Police went to the Dunmore Terrace apartment at 1.40am on Tuesday to check on the welfare of a family.

Detective Acting Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said the girl's 65-year-old father was asleep in another room.

He said police were called there after concerns were raised with them earlier on Monday evening.

"There was a call from concerned people just to go and check on how they were," he said.

"There were some issues in relation to the relationship earlier that night.

"So police have gone around and been confronted with the deceased child."

Supt Sheldon said officers and paramedics were confronted with a "traumatic" scene at the apartment.

He said the father of the girl was being questioned by police.

The mother, 49, was found dead by passers-by in the Toowong area.

Another child, an eight-year-old girl, is unharmed.

Police are in the preliminary stages of their investigation, and are yet to piece together the exact circumstances that led to the deaths.

"We have a family that has been literally decimated, as far as things go," Supt Sheldon said.

"We don't know who fits where, as far as the puzzle goes, but I'm sure more will become apparent as we continue our investigation."

Supt Sheldon said the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths could have a "ripple effect" impacting the entire community.
