IKEA Australia Won’t Recall Drawers That Killed Three Kids

Despite recalling at least 27 million chests and dressers in the US, IKEA does not plan to do the same in Australia.

The Malm chest of drawers were recalled after three toddlers died in two years when the furniture fell on them.

The popular items, which are top heavy – meaning they can fall forward easily, tragically crushed the children.

However, IKEA Australia said they will not be undertaking the recall.

“IKEA chest of drawers are safe when attached to the wall as directed in the assembly instructions,” a spokesman said.

“We spread awareness of the importance of securing furniture on our products and product instructions, on the website and in stores.”

The Malm drawers come with anti-tip restraints that can be attached to a wall to prevent tipping.
