Koala Found Horrendously Mutilated With Ears Cut Off
Police have discovered a koala with horrendous mutilations in Victoria's southwest during investigations into a number of native animal killings.
The koala was found dead on Hopkins Point Road near Warrnambool on Monday with both of it's ears cut off.
Police are now investigating whether the iconic Australian animal was alive or dead when it's ears were removed.
"Investigators have been told there has been a spate of similar mutilations involving kangaroos and wallabies, but understand this to be the first involving a koala," said a spokeswoman from Victoria Police.
Investigators working on the case have called the situation "troubling and disgusting".
"We certainly want to get to the bottom of it. There is no reason for anybody to treat an animal in this way, whether it be alive or dead," Sergeant Pat Day told reporters.
Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
