Police Warn Us About New Crime Trend Targeting Aussie Homes
Sophisticated syndicates are targeting the humble letterbox to steal identities and send vital personal information abroad, where it is used to fund criminal networks and even terrorism.
Today NSW police have warned australians about this 'new face of crime' in Australia.
The head of the State Crime Command Fraud and Cybercrime Squad, Arthur Katsogiannis, says that what many consider petty mail theft is being used to develop complex profiles on unsuspecting victims so that their identities can be assumed by fraudsters to fund activities including terrorism.
"This information, once it's been used over here in Australia domestically, is sold overseas to criminal syndicates and it can be used over there to claim people's identities for a whole variety of measures, that (terrorism) being one of them," Detective Superintendent Katsogiannis said in Sydney on Wednesday.
With identity theft on the rise it’s more important than ever to protect your personal details, and therefore your mail.
Australia Post strongly recommend that you protect your mail by installing the right sized letterbox for the volume of mail you receive and also by fitting a lock to your letterbox to deter would-be thieves.
