Maggie Kirkpatrick Found Guilty Of Sex Abuse

Prisoner star Maggie Kirkpatrick has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenage psychiatric patient in Melbourne the 1980s.

The 74-year-old NSW actress faced a contested hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court after being charged with two counts of indecent assault and one count of committing an act of gross indecency with a person under 16.

Magistrate Peter Mealy on Thursday found the complainant was a "witness of truth".

Mealy noted there were inconsistencies in the timing of some events in the victim's testimony, but he was satisfied the passage of 30 years was the cause of the mistake.

"I am satisfied that she is a witness of truth," he said.

Defence lawyer Justine Hannebery asked Mr Mealy to consider imposing a community correction order, and not a jail term.

"This is a single incident of limited duration," Mr Hannebery told the court.

Kirkpatrick assaulted the 14-year-old girl at her Prahran house in 1984 after a woman who worked with the actress arranged a meeting with the young fan.

The teen was a patient at a psychiatric hospital at the time.

Mr Hannebery said the incident didn't involve violence or the threat of violence, or penetration.

"Mrs Kirkpatrick is entitled to the benefit of 31 years without similar matters," he said.

Prosecutors did not oppose a non-custodial sentence for the grandmother of two.

Kirkpatrick will be assessed for a community corrections order and returns to court on Friday.
