Qld heatwave 'first of many': BOM

A scorching weekend heatwave expected to hit southeast Queensland will be the first of many this summer, forecasters warn.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a top of 35 degrees for Brisbane on Saturday, while areas further west are expected to peak above 40 - more than 10 degrees above average.

"We're in the midst of one of the strongest El Ninos on record and these sorts of heat waves will be commonplace in the next four to six weeks," forecaster Jess Carey said.
