QLD Teens Charged After Discarded Ciggie Creates Bushfire

Two teenagers have been charged after a large fire in southeast Queensland was started by lit cigarettes flicked into dry grass.

The fire destroyed about 38 hectares of bushland near Atkinsons Dam in the Lockyer Valley on Sunday.

Rural Fire Service crews eventually extinguished the blaze.

A 17-year-old woman and 18-year-old man will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday charged with discarding an item causing a fire that endangered property.

Emergency service officers have used the fire to remind Queensland residents to discard of cigarettes responsibly, as the state continues to swelter through dry, hot and windy conditions.
