Brisbane's Slowest Road Has An Average Speed Of Just 12km/h

Commuters on Brisbane’s north side are getting caught on the city’s slowest roads according to the RACQ.

The motoring body has revealed Brisbane’s worst traffic choke points in August with Kedron Park Road between Park Road and Gympie Road earning the top spot.

Commuters travelling outbound of an afternoon averaged just 12 kilometres an hour along the traffic corridor – two kilometres slower than any other road.

Coming in second was Southpine Road and Wardell Street between Samford and Stafford Road at just 14 kilometres an hour on the outbound run.

Travelling speeds were slightly better for the inbound run with the slowest route along Jubilee Terrace between Stewart Road and Macgregor Terrace averaging 17 kilometres per hour.

RACQ’s Paul Turner said more needs to be done to ease the city’s traffic woes.

“Traffic flows at choke points were barely reaching an average jogging pace and it’s no wonder our members are frustrated,” he said.

“Improvements could be as simple as traffic signal timing or better coordination of traffic signals – other options, which are more expensive, include additional lanes and intersection upgrades.”

North side commuters would be able to attest to the number with some of the city’s busiest roads brought crashing to a halt on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency road works on the Gateway Motorway at Nudgee saw travel times of up to an hour and 15 minutes to travel just seven kilometres on the arterial road.

Bus services were delayed by up to an hour as the traffic woes spread along the Sandgate Road and Gympie Road corridors.

A burst underground main which damaged a lane of the Gateway and required urgent road works was blamed for the congestion.
