The Reason Behind 191 Shoes On Bondi Beach

The sun rose over Bondi Beach this morning, revealing 191 pairs of men’s shoes laid across the sand.

The statement was to symbolise the Australian men who died by suicide this past month.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the stunt had been organised by the Movember Foundation. Movember is a campaign designed to raise money for research into men’s health issues including mental health, prostate and testicular cancer.

Co-founder of the Movember Foundation Adam Garone said the stunt at Bondi Beach also served as a metaphor that Australia can’t bury its head in the sand on this national health crisis.

Over the years, money raised from Movemeber has helped the foundation fund over 1,200 game-changing programs in prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide prevention around the world.

According to statistics, suicide is the leading cause of death for Australian men ages between 15 and 44 and, on average, six men each day take their own life.
