An elderly gay couple have been ordered to take down a gay pride flag from their apartment in Port Melbourne.

Body corporate threatened them with legal action if they didn’t comply.

Murray Sheldrick, 78 and James Bellia, 72 received an email from the Melbourne Inner City Management Property Owners Corporation on Wednesday last week.

The reason behind the request was that the flag was “displaying advertising material”.

The couple, who have been together for 50 years and bought the flag in February, have since removed the flag.

“We are positive it is homophobia, there is no doubt about it. Why else would they bother us? The flag is on a huge terrace, it’s not in anyone’s view”, they told The Age

The couple moved from Mansfield to Melbourne in 1998 after a horrible life threatening attack by two locals who invaded their home and attached Sheldrick, leaving him in intensive care for three and a half weeks.

The only brought out the flag on special occasions such as Australia Day, Queen’s Birthday and the Midsumma Festival.
