Elton John has told fans ‘with the heaviest heart’ that he was cancelling a show on his US farewell tour, due to being “extremely unwell.”

John’s mother-in-law, Gladys Furnish, mother of his husband David Furnish, died on Thursday, and the singer acknowledged the death at his show in Toronto that night.

He told the crowd that the woman he called the matriarch of the Furnish family had died, sending condolences to her family before dedicating “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” to her.

In the message he posted on social media, John promised to perform the Indianapolis concert in March 2020, and thanked fans for their understanding.

There’s no word on whether the next stop on his farewell tour, Monday at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, will be affected.

Furnish posted a tribute to his mother on Instagram Friday.

“Rest in peace Mum. You lived your life impeccably. I will never forget you. I promise to do my best to pass the gifts you gave to me on to my own beautiful sons.”
