Daryl Somers and the Hey Hey team are cheering after their 50th anniversary special was a ratings hit for Channel Seven on Sunday night.

Pulling in 1.224 million metro viewers, Hey Hey It’s 50 Years became the network’s “biggest special program for 2021”.

The program beat Nine’s The Block, which took second place in entertainment programs on Sunday night with 998,000 metro viewers, and the premiere of Ten’s Celebrity MasterChef Australia with only 620,000 viewers.

This comes after the show was praised online, with many wanting the program to return permanently.

“How much am I enjoying the Hey Hey It’s Saturday 50 year reunion on telly tonight!!! Bring it back!!!!” one person wrote.

Another added, “Watching Hey Hey It’s Saturday 50th anniversary tonight I thought about how simple life used to be, how easy it was to laugh, to take the mickey without offending, and how simple humour could enrich our lives. We need what this show gave us.”

Did you watch it? What did you think of it?
