You know how a party is great while it’s happening but the day after is kind of a buzz kill. You’re probably feeling a little under the weather and there’s always tons of cleaning up to do.

Well it seems this is sort of how Miley Cyrus is feeling following her incredibly public break up with Liam Hemsworth.

Over the weekend the singer released the music video for her break up single ‘Slide Away’, which she released just shortly after calling time on her marriage to Hemsworth.

In the lyrics for the song, Miley sings about people growing apart and the need to let go. In the music video, she use the metaphor of a party to visualise this sentiment.

The video opens on Miley in a pool, with the use of camera angles making even us feel the grogginess that you would feel after a big night. The pool and the rest of the house around her is covered with memories of a party from the night before, including empty alcohol bottles, pizza boxes and general mess.

Throughout the video, Miley has flashbacks to the party, showing the juxtaposition between the liveliness of the gathering and the dreariness of the aftermath. In this case, we can assume that the party is referencing the relationship and the aftermath is the break up.

The video ends on a shot of Miley laying her head on her arms on the side of the pool as she stares off into the distance. It makes us feel like there’s no real resolution to the way Miley is feeling, perhaps referencing that she’s not completely healed since the break up, but she’s trying to let go.

Miley did her first live performance of the song at the 2019 VMAs recently and it was pretty emotional.

It came after she shock split from Liam Hemsworth in early August, after less than a year of marriage.
