When Pete Davidson appeared on Saturday Night Live we were expecting a comment about his recent breakup with ex-fiancee and singer Ariana Grande, but we weren’t really expecting it to go down like this.

Davidson had nothing but kind words to say about Grande, saying that their very public split was “nobody’s business” and labelling his ex a “wonderful person”. This is despite a recent joke that Davidson made about the breakup that left Ariana less than impressed.

The episode of SNL that aired on Saturday evening was the first to air since the comedian and the ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ singer broke off their engagement back in mid-October.

During his segment, Davidson said that things just didn’t work out between the pair but he didn’t appear to hold any animosity towards his ex.

“I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is it’s really nobody’s business, and sometimes things just don’t work out,” he said.

“She’s a wonderful, strong person and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world. Now please, go vote on Tuesday.”

This address came just half an hour after Grande dropped a brand new track titled ’thank u, next’, in which she addressed Pete by name and made her own public comment about their relationship, as well as her relationships with a number of other exes.

However, just days prior, things had appeared to be getting messy between Pete and Ariana. In a promo for the Saturday’s SNL episode, Pete joked about his breakup with Ariana by pretending to propose to musical guest Maggie Rogers.

Ariana then appeared to respond on Twitter, hitting back at her ex by saying, “For somebody who claims to hate relevancy you sure love clinging to it huh”.

But on Saturday, after Ariana released her new song, reports emerged in TMZ saying that Davidson’s sketch about the breakup was ditched because the 24-year-old comedian no longer wanted to “go through with it”.

In the song, ‘Thank U, Next’, which Ariana first began teasing on Friday and dropped on Saturday, she sings about her former lover and what she’s learned from each relationship, naming Pete, Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez and the late Mac Miller in the lyrics.

“Thought I’d end up with Sean/ But it wasn’t a match/ Wrote some songs about Ricky/ Now I listen and laugh,” sings Ariana.

“Even almost got married/ And for Pete, I’m so thankful/ Wish I could say, ‘Thank you to Malcolm ‘Cause he was an angel.”

This new song comes after the ‘Breathin’ singer told her fans that he next album will also be called ‘Thank U, Next’.

“Issa song and an album…you’ll get the song first,” she revealed. “A new chapter, gratitude, growth, embracing our path bumps n all…thank u, next.”

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson first started officially dating back in May after Grande broke up with her late ex-boyfriend Mac Miller. Their whirlwind romance quickly turned up the heat after the pair became engaged about a month later.

However, in mid-October, after Miller’s death, Ariana and Pete called it quits. It’s not known for certain what caused the split, however, there were scathing reports that said that Pete had sent intimate photos of himself and Ariana to Miller before his death.
