Simone O’Brien is a resilient, inspirational and amazing woman.
The single mum was the victim of an absolutely harrowing domestic violence attack at the time of her then partner, to the point where she was on the brink of death with just 5% chance of survival.
Her three kids – then 15, 12 and 10 – were forced to say goodbye to their mum twice while she was fighting for life in hospital.
The two eldest still undoubtedly traumatised by the sounds of Simone suffering 45 – 50 blows to the head with a baseball bat that the perpetrator had most likely planted inside the house.
Due to an absolute miracle, Simone has lived to tell her tale and has officially signed on as an ambassador for Darkness 2 Daylight. A charitable run or walk in memory of lives lost and those suffering due to domestic and family violence.
In fact, not only did she survive but she has gone on to run the New York Marathon to fundraise for sufferers of family violence.
We can’t begin to imagine the strength that it takes – both physical and psychological – to will yourself to run a marathon for such a good cause.
She will be able to put on her sneakers come the 29th of May when Darkness to Daylight begins their 110km run overnight.
Each km representing a life lost to DV on average in any given year in Australia.
You can participate alone or in a relay team. Want to get involved but don’t think 110km is for you? There are also 10km and 3km legs available that join the group in the early hours of the 30th of May for the final run home.
