It’s only taken eleven years but it looks like we’re finally going to see a sequel to the film based around our favourite dysfunctional cartoon family, The Simpsons!

Back in 2007 fans of the long-running TV show flocked to the cinemas, donuts in hand, to see Homer and his clan take on the big screen in The Simpsons Movie.

And now, according to The Wall Street Journal, a second instalment of the animation film is in the works with Twentieth Century Fox more than a decade later!

The WSJ reports that Fox chief executive Stacey Snider is pushing ahead with plans for The Simpsons Movie 2 despite the fact that the company may cease to exist in the future having been bought by Disney.

“Ms Snider has emphasised a revamp of Fox’s approach to animation, bringing in a new partner to replace an expired deal with DreamWorks Animation after it was acquired by Comcast Corp,” says the report.

“The film studio is partnering with the Fox television studio on a big-screen adaption of the animated series Bob’s Burgers, a second Simpsons movie in development and a Family Guy film that would mix animation with live action, said people with knowledge of the projects,” the report continues.

No word yet on the plot of this sequel but judging by the first film we can assume that it might touch on timely world issues in a exaggerated, crazy and humorous fashion.

In the original Simpson’s Movie we saw an environmental crisis take over Springfield with their over-polluted lake raising concerns with an American government.

After the main character Homer Simpson dumps an item in the lake that sends the cities pollution over the edge and as a result Springfield is quarantined by a massive glass dome.

The Simpsons family is exiled by the city until Homer rises up to save the day and redeem his entire family by destroying the glass dome and freeing the entrapped town.

Director of the film David Silverman said that he would be open to making a sequel when the first film was released but said that it wouldn’t be form “maybe another 10, 15 years” because the first one was such a mammoth effort to make.

The Simpsons has been on air on our TV screens since 1989 and has already run for 29 seasons. The show will commence it’s 30th season later in September and now it looks like they’ll also be adding a second film under their belt!
