Changes are coming to Australian airlines to ensure safety precautions when it comes to luggage.

In an attempt to clamp down on passengers bringing overweight baggage on board planes, Virgin Australia says customers will have their cabin luggage weighed at airport check-in desks to ensure the 7kg limit is not exceeded.

All passengers flying domestic from Australian airports will have their cabin bags weighed from Tuesday 11th December 2018

The airline is following Qantas, which made a similar announcement last week.

Budget airlines Tigerair and Jetstar already weigh hand luggage before passengers board.

This change is to crack down on passengers bringing excess hand luggage, and taking up space in the overhead lockers. It will also be less of a safety risk for flight attendants assisting the passengers in putting their luggage in the overhead lockers and retrieving them upon landing.
