NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has joined others in the call to change the lyrics of the Australian National Anthem to acknowledge our Indigenous history.

Berejiklian wants the words of Advance Australia Fair to change from “young and free” to “one and free”.

“I love our national anthem. I get goose bumps every time I hear it sung or played, but think one word change will make such a difference,” the NSW Premier told The Daily Telegraph.

She added, “There should be a national discussion on this involving all Australians including Indigenous Australians.”

This wouldn’t be the first time the anthem has changed in our lifetime. Some may remember the lyrics changing from “Australia’s sons let us rejoice” to “Australians all let us rejoice”.

The urge to change the lyrics comes amid the State of Origin anthem controversy, with multiple Indigenous players stating that the anthem does not take into account the history of Australia First Nation’s people.
