Online word game ‘Wordle’ has become a smash hit across the globe with millions of users jumping on to have a crack at each of the daily words with no clues and within just six attempts.

However, for the game’s creator, Josh Wardle, it seems the game has grown much bigger than he ever anticipated.

“Which I suppose isn’t that much of a feat given I made the game for an audience of one.”

Citing concerns about being able to provide an ongoing ‘great experience’ as the game’s popularity continues to explode, Mr Wardle on Tuesday announced that he had sold the game to the New York Times.

“I’ve long admired the NYT’s approach to their games and the respect with which they treat their players.”

Some New York Times games require a paid subscription to play but the company insists that Worlde will remain free.

“At the time it moves to The New York Times, Wordle will be free to play for new and existing players, and no changes will be made to its gameplay.”

Mr Wardle said he’ll also be working with the company to ensure current player’s wins and streaks will be preserved when the switch occurs.
